Shaman is a Sorcerer type unit with average magic attack, speed, and good defense. Shaman's unique ability is dancing: this unit has a 30% chance to start a dance for 3 turns, locking down random enemy units for one turn each. Only one unit can be disabled at a time, and the Shaman is ignored by other units during the dance.
There are certain limits to Shaman's ability. Note that it doesn't work on Ogres or Troglodytes, and several squads of Shamans can't use their ability at the same time. If there's a target in the opponent's army with an ability that allows that unit to be ignored (Succubus, Halfling, or Siren and Shaman with their abilities active), your allied Shaman will not use its ability on them, provided that there are other targets available.
It's advised to protect your Shaman squad, since if your Shaman dies amidst a dance, its target unit will wake up if they haven't missed their turn yet. Keep in mind that if a Shaman's already started their 3-turn dance, the dance will not be interrupted even if there are no valid targets left (i.e. its last stunned target gets killed, and the only enemy squad remaining is, say, Troglodytes). The dance will end after 3 turns.
