You may hire many heroes in Castle Age, but you may only have one of them set as your General at any given time. Buy heroes at the Heroes page and set them by clicking on the large general portrait on the top right of the screen or by navigating to the generals page(Heroes page->Generals page). Your currently set general is shown on the top right hand side of the screen.
