Introduction

Some dragons in DragonVale can only be obtained by transforming existing dragons in your park. To obtain one of these dragons you'll need to collect special decorations, grow certain treats, or wait for certain weather conditions.  For the purposes of this article these dragons will be referred to as "evolution dragons".

Evolution Dragon Requirements

There are several kinds of dragons that can be evolved in DragonVale. To obtain one of these dragons you'll need to meet certain requirements, and also have the necessary base dragon. The base dragon is the dragon that you will transform or "evolve" into the new dragon.

Please keep in mind that evolving a dragon is permanent and once you have performed the evolution you will no longer have the original base dragon in your park.

The charts below list each of the evolution dragons and provide the requirements to evolve that dragon.

Dracomancy Dragon

The Dracomancy dragon, despite being a Spooky dragon, has a different evolution mechanic!
To evolve the Dracomancy dragon, obtain the "Ominous Digsite" decoration and upgrade it to its different stages.

Note: Dracomancy has 4 stages -  a base one and 3 evolution stages. Upgrading the "Ominous Digsite" to the maximum will allow you to evolve Dracomancy to the final (fourth) stage.

Once you've met all requirements for an evolution dragon, and have the necessary base dragon, you can perform the evolution using the steps below.

  1. Locate the dragon you wish to evolve and tap on it
  2. Tap the "Evolve" icon at the bottom of the dragon's info card
  3. In the pop up menu, tap to select the type of dragon you wish to evolve to, then tap the confirm button
  4. Tap the "Evolve" button to transform your dragon. Please note there is an additional cost to evolve a dragon, usually 100 Gems.

It is important to note that when you transform one of your dragons it will evolve into a new dragon, and the original dragon will no longer be available in your park. Please keep this in mind if you only have one of the dragon you wish to evolve.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to evolve a dragon?

The cost to evolve a dragon is typically 100 Gems.

Can evolution dragons be bred?

Evolution dragons can only be bred if both parent dragons are the desired dragon. For example, Bloatato + Bloatato has a chance of producing another Bloatato Dragon, but Bloatato + another dragon does not.

How do I obtain the pedestal of an evolution dragon?

Pedestals for evolution dragons can be obtained by breeding two evolution dragons together to get another which you can then display as a pedestal. Please keep in mind that both parents must be the same dragon (Ghostly Fire + Ghostly Fire, Corrupticorn + Corrupticorn, etc,) in order to breed another. If you receive an evolution dragon from an Egg of Mystery, daily log in reward, etc. you could also choose to display that egg as a pedestal.

I have one or more of the Effigies but can't evolve a ghostly dragon. What's wrong?

Only the primary dragons can be evolved into ghostly dragons. The Fire Dragon, Plant Dragon, Cold Dragon, and Earth Dragon can be evolved into ghostly versions, but hybrids like the Flower Dragon, Mountain Dragon, Blazing Dragon, etc. cannot be evolved into Ghostly versions.

How do I evolve Hybrid Ghostly Dragons?

Hybrid Ghostly Dragons (Ghostly Evergreen, Ghostly Lava, etc.) cannot be evolved and are obtained by breeding the primary Ghostly Dragons together. Breeding combinations for hybrid ghostly dragons can be found in the in-game breeding hints.

How do I unlock the Treats needed to evolve certain dragons?

In order to unlock certain Treat types you must plant the correct combination of Treats in Towering Treat Farms, and those farms must be placed so that they are touching each other. It is also important to note that even if you have the right combination of Treats planted it will likely take a few tries for the cross-pollination to be successful.

How do I level my Berry, Seed, and Sprout Dragons above level 10?

In order to level Epic dragons past level 10, you need the Relic of the Epics or the Monument of the Epics. Each of these will allow you to raise your Epic dragons 5 extra levels. If you have one of these buildings in your park your Epic dragons will max out at level 15. With both buildings in your park your Epic dragons will max out at level 20.

How do I collect evolution decorations (Flame of Corruption, Arc Lamps, etc)?

The decorations required to evolve dragons are typically offered during the seasonal events in DragonVale. Decorations can also be purchased in the Market during the Bring 'em Back events. Additionally, special starter kits containing all decorations and the necessary base dragon are offered at various times throughout the year.
